I offer this training to my private clients. It's easy for them to set up, easy to do, and if their dog loves their dinner kibbles, it's an easy way to feed dinner and get the training done! Most of my clients have no desire to understand arousal until they "see it," and then ask for help. I often combine this with mat work so that they can have a special target area for the dog to lay on wherever they go.

FAQ

  • I am not a professional dog trainer yet. Can I take this course?

Absolutely! This course does not require that you have any special understanding of training in order to use the method.

  • I have been a professional trainer for many years. Will I get anything out of this course?

Yes! If nothing else, you will find a new way to explain choice based down stay training to your students. This is a simple method however, it is very powerful. This course goes into the nitty gritty details and it will allow you to discuss the benefits of this type of choice based down stay with clients and colleagues alike.

  • Can this method be used with puppies, older dogs or dogs with mobility needs?

Yes! I have used this method with puppies as young as seven weeks, and as old as 13 years, and with my own dog when he was recovering from knee surgery. This is a very safe method.

  • Do you use force with this method?

No! This method is based on teaching the dog that they can feel safe on a tether and that lying down pays very well. This feeling of safety and confidence allows dogs to work towards a reliable down stay, off tether, in high distraction situations.

  • Will dogs learn boundaries using this method?

Yes they will! This method is taught using a tether so that the dog can learn that the only consequence to breaking the down is that the food will stop. In this method we do not abandon dogs who are concerned enough to stand up during a down stay.

  • Is this method suitable for anxious or aggressive dogs?

Yes! In fact this protocol was originally developed to help dogs in my behaviour program. Over the past thirty years, thousands of dogs have benefitted from this method, learning to tolerate and even enjoy things that may have previously been a problem.
